Over 26,000 people are injured or killed annually by the 60~70 million
land mines in over 70 countries around the world. According the
United Nations, it costs as little as $3.00 to produce a land mine
and upwards of $ 1,000
to remove one. This is a huge, global, problem.
Please support me in my effort to help clear the approximately
3.5 million land mines in Vietnam, that are injuring and killing
over 180 Vietnamese every month by sponsoring the Minesweepers team
run in the Marine
Corps Marathon, Washington DC, October 26th, 2003. (Note:
While I still hope to run, I may not be able to. I injured my achilles
tendon in training. If not this year, I'll run next year once I've
healed up. I'm still raising money for the program, and involved
with the organization, so your contributions will be most appreciated).
These land mines are devastating to the Vietnamese populations and
economy. They're endangering adults, children, and livestock, and
have made large ranges of fertile land inaccessible for farming.
I'm running with Minesweepers®,
a running charity affiliated with the United Nations, dedicated
to helping clear the minefields in Vietnam. There are 16 of us running
on this year's team, and we're targeting to raise over $28,000 dollars
for the cause. Every dollar raised goes to the United Nations with
over 97% of your contribution going directly to clearing the mine
fields in Vietnam.
